That is the part I have gotten good at. I build small rooms where people arrive as strangers and leave as a group text. On my last trip, a seventy-year-old man and a man half his age spent an evening comparing notes on their partners, and by the end of it, they were laughing at each other. Nobody had to explain themselves. Nobody had to be brave about it. That is not luck. That is the room I build, on purpose, every time.  

And then, there is Ghana itself.  

You will stand inside the dungeons of Cape Coast Castle and pass through the Door of No Return. I am not going to write something clever about that. You will stand there, and you will feel what you feel, and you will not be standing there alone. There will be people beside you who understand without needing it explained, and there will be a long, quiet ride afterward where nobody fills the silence.  

Then, a canopy walk high above Kakum National Park. And the shores of Cape Coast at the end, where the Atlantic finally lets you rest.

I came to this country with twenty dollars and three borrowed flannel shirts in an Atlanta winter, which tells you everything about how much I knew. I am Jamaican. I have lived in Harlem for twenty-six years. I spend my days in private banking, which is where I learned that the numbers do not lie—and neither should you.  

Through My Lens started by accident in 2019, when two friends asked me to show them Jamaica the way I know it, not the way the brochure knows it. We had the best week of that year, and people kept asking me to do it again.  

Seven years later, I still plan every trip myself. I walk the hotels, meet the guides, and know the communities.

Now heading into my 4th annual trip to Ghana in 2027, I know these streets, these hotels, and these communities inside and out. I still travel with every single group, because the whole point is the room, and you cannot build the room from home.

What do I need to know about flights and transfers?

You will need to book your flights to Ghana, ensuring you arrive in Accra (Kotoka International Airport) by the start date of the trip (October 16, 2027). Upon arrival, you will be greeted by our team for a smooth transfer to your hotel. We include round-trip airport transfers to and from the hotel.

Do I need a visa for Ghana?

Yes—a visa is required for U.S. citizens traveling to Ghana. You have two options to obtain it:

   You can apply for your visa before departure by submitting the application form, a valid passport (with at least 6 months of validity beyond your travel dates), passport-sized photos, and the applicable fee to the Ghana Embassy or Consulate. Can I pay for the trip in installments?

Yes, we offer flexible payment plans to make the trip more manageable. You can pay a non-refundable deposit to secure your reservation and then make automatic or manual payments according to the schedule at booking.

Is travel insurance part of the trip package?

Travel insurance is not included in the trip package but is strongly recommended to safeguard your investment. It covers unexpected events such as trip cancellations, medical emergencies, and lost belongings. Your policy should include medical coverage, and we highly recommend "Cancel for Any Reason" (CFAR) clauses. Please purchase travel insurance immediately after booking, as most providers only allow 10–14 days from initial deposit to add CFAR protection. (Note: CFAR coverage may not be available in every state.)

Can I join the trip if I’m traveling solo?

Absolutely! Many of our guests are solo travelers. You’ll have the option of a private room (single occupancy) or a shared room for two guests (double occupancy). We cannot guarantee roommate pairing. You are responsible for the full single room cost if a roommate is not paired with you.

What vaccinations are needed for Ghana?

Travelers to Ghana are required to have a Yellow Fever vaccination (applies to anyone over nine months of age). You must present proof of vaccination (Yellow Card) upon entry. Advanced planning is recommended as vaccine supply and pricing vary by provider and state. A single dose generally provides lifelong immunity. Malaria prophylaxis is also recommended—please consult your medical professional for personal guidance.

What is the naming ceremony?

You’ll take part in a traditional “Sankofa” naming ceremony led by local elders. You will receive a Ghanaian name connected to the day of your birth—a symbolic return and beautiful cultural moment.

I was raised in a village in Jamaica for the first 12 years of my life. When I look at these children, I see something familiar-the simplicity, the curiosity, the laughter, the strength, and the ability to find joy in the little things.

And perhaps that is why this connection means so much. It is not about giving back. It is about recognizing where we come from, and reminding ourselves that resilience can be inherited, joy can be cultivated, and wonder should never be lost.
